2 Down

Finally got time to complete some web projects. Both sites are now updated and ready for public consumption.

One website is for the portfolio for an interior design firm while the other is a info-tourism website for a small town in the Philippines

You can visit the sites here and here

So only one more to go for a complete redesign and another to be fixed..

iPhone 4S to be offered by Smart Telecoms

Regional Apple officials were reportedly peeved by MVP’s announcement of Smart’s impending tie-up with the Silicon Valley giant for the distribution of the new iPhone 4S in the Philippines. The telecom executive made the revelation last week much to the chagrin of Apple officials known for their strict publicity guidelines.

DIY media server

I recently built a media server at home for personal use. I found it very useful and beneficial since it allows me to store all my media, ie. videos, photos and music in one place. Now, I am able to watch my favorite shows using my iPhone or iPad or even my desktop machine. I can transfer to another device midway and I don’t need to start from the beginning.

My setup is using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu Linux, Lucid Lynx. I didn’t install any GUI since the server is running headless. The applications installed to help out in managing my server is Webmin and Plex Media Server. File managment and hardware configuration is done thru the Webmin application. Although I did start out using the command-line interface at first prior to using Webmin.

If want to build your own media server there are a lot of guides you can search in Google that outlines how to build one step by step.

For my build, I had to do my own research since I had specific needs like having it multi-platform, easy setup and supported at least the majority of the audio-video codecs. This is also the reason why I had to use Plex instead of the other media manager apps out there. Plex app provided a linux-based media server app and multi-platform clients that play most of the videos that I have. I can now watch .avi files and other videos in my iOS devices thru the plex app for iOS. The only tweaking I had to do was for the Windows desktop I have since Plex doesn’t have a client app yet for Windows. The solution was to install the XBMC app and the PleXBMC plugin.

Everything worked out well so far. The only thing left to do is upgrade my other PC and hook it up to the HD TV.

Steve’s thoughts on Flash

. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

I think Steve was right in a sense that mobile web browsing should adapt ‘open standards’. There should not be any one entity having their proprietary software forced down the users. I’d like to be able browse websites without needing to install any plugins or add-ons to view videos, photos or streaming video.

Also, in my personal experience with websites that use flash, they are buggy and frequently crash. They also hog alot of RAM, that’s why I uninstalled the plugin in my Safari browser.

Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

Time after time, he sold people on a product they didn’t know they needed until he invented it. And all this on an official annual salary of $1.
